Totenkopf Moth

Remember Silence of the Lambs (1991)? I found an old German print showing sphinx moths. In the center is a terrific lithograph of Acherontia atropos —one of the species of Death’s Head Moths. In German, on the print, it says Totenkopf. Literally “skull of dead man”.

This is the moth that Buffalo Bill, the serial killer, raises in his creepy domicile. He placed the pupa of the moth in his victim’s throat. Yuk. For my 40th birthday, my friend’s Bill and Laurie purchased a mounted Death’s Head and presented it to me. I don’t know what they were trying to say… But, I still have it hanging on the wall…
