Female Demon Ohyaku (1968)
This 1968 TOEI release is available on DVD from Synapse Films, Inc. The restored anamorphic transfer is superb and the DVD offers several supplements. To be honest, I had never heard of the film and was only remotely familiar with Toei for releasing Terror Beneath the Sea / Kaitei dai senso a year earlier (I love that flick). Legends of the Poisonous Seductress: Female Demon Ohyaku is non-stop in your face entertainment from the opening titles with Ohyaku performing on a tightrope to the very end when she let’s all hell loose. This is the Kill Bill of the 60’s. Tarantino must love this film. I’m hard-pressed to categorize this film —I’m sure there is a Japanese term for it, but it falls under the “Pinky Violence” sub-genre. What the hell is that? Ass-kicking Japanese babes with sword-in-hand and vendetta to quench. Lead babe Junko Miyazono (as Ohyaku) just blew my socks off.
The plot is simple enough: exhibitionist Ohyaku hooks up with thief, steals gold from heavy, falls in love with thief, heavy seeks revenge, thief and Ohyaku are tortured, Ohyaku escapes and comes back to kick some ass. The torture scenes are not for the squeamish.
Along the way Ohyaku get’s some demon ink and seduces the Tattooist. Samurai swords and lesbians… Get out the Sake.
Along the way there are several terrific horror sequences and stark b/w compositions. Ohyaku is good with a chain.
There are 3 flicks in this series starring Miyazono, including No. 2 Quick-Draw Okatsu and No. 3 Okatsu The Fugitive. These are in color and also worth checking out via Synapse. Ohyaku is the gem though.
