Shame On You / Haram Alek / Have Mercy (1954)
This film is —get this: An Arabic version of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein! But it stars Abdul and Ismael. How can you go wrong with Abdul and Ismael Meet Frankenstein? Many many ways. The fact that this 1954 Arabic-language remake exists boggles my mind. I got it as a freebie from a vender at Monster Bash.
I thought to myself, this has got to be fun, but fully expected it to be a horrible print. I was wrong —the print is fine, but the film is horrid. Ismael and Abdul scream and squawk and yell at each other incessantly, and the monsters stumble and trip over fairly interesting sets. You haven’t lived a full life until you see the Egyptian Dracula!
Actually, the film is worth seeing purely for curiosity sake. It’s pretty much a scene-for-scene remake of the A&C classic, and the sets aren’t bad. The photography isn’t much to write home about with static camera shots and poor use of lighting.
Check out the Bela impersonator! Maybe it’s Ed Wood’s chiropractor!
The monster makeup isn’t bad, following Jack Pierce’s general concept of the Karloff monster.
The monster has a bit of a mullet going.
Well, there you have it. I’ve seen it all. They don’t make ’em like they used to!
