Remember the bat-rat-spider creature and those wacky red scenes from The Angry Red Planet (1959)? The red sequences were accomplished on a miniscule budget by filming on black and white stock, printing as a negative, applying a solarisation effect, and then the film was tinted red.

Now these effects are easily rendered with an iPhone and a few photographic apps like Thumba and Snapseed.  First take a shot of something and convert to black and white (reduce saturation):

Next, convert to a negative image:

Then solarise the image (this is a partial negative image). I use the Thumba App:

Then tint the image red.  Now you have The Angry Red Spider!
