I met Kenny Baker one time. It was back in the mid-1990’s at the Motor City Comicon. He signed and personalized a photograph for my friend Laurie. The place just crackled with energy around him, and I remember he was far more engaging than your typical celebrity du jour —he told stories, laughed, asked me my name and was even more animated than the R2D2 personification he is known for. It’s no wonder that astrodroid is forever imbedded in pop culture and robot lexicon. The mold was broken with Kenny Baker. RIP.
